The stepfather of Mitchell Joseph Day Mitchell and mother Josephine Marian Mitchell (nee Jenkins) are lawyers based in Dallas. Mitchell and mother moved from California to Dallas Texas from California in 1970. In 1975 Mitchell's mother got married to Joseph Mitchell. Mitchell has a degree from Booker T. Washington High School, a magnet public school for visual and performing arts. Mitchell is the oldest of three sisters with the others including Kristina Kristie Mitchell, Helen Kristie Mitchell as well as Katherine Day Kate Mitchell. She graduated in 1991 from Stephens College with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in acting and furthering her studies at the British American Drama Academy.Mitchell worked for a period of six years at Dallas Theater Center and a time at the Encore Theater.
